Course Description

The definition of cognitive psychology is the analysis and study of various mental processes revolving around attention, perception, memory, language, solving problems, creative expression otherwise known as creativity and general thinking.

Cognitive psychology focuses on various variables that mediate or interact between input and output responses including the stimulus involving both. Cognitive psychologists look at how we process perception, attention, memory, language and thinking.

All our experiences in life come to us through any one of our five senses such as visual, auditory, olfactory, kinaesthetic and oral. The information around the world, the environment comes into our brain through any one of these senses or doorways to the mind and that information is called stimuli and produces a mass of data generally called the intellect. This information that we hold within our mind is formulated from the data we have collected through our senses from the external world. This information cannot come to us in any other way but through these doorways. Cognitive psychologists focus on the study this.

The word cognitive means knowing.

The purpose of cognitive psychology is to interpret and analyse information and processes for the production of explanations on why people behave a certain way. Collectively these generalisations are applied to all human behaviour for various reasons including labelling and classification for identifying disorders, irregularities, symptoms, or mental disorders, sickness and ill-health.

There are many psychological approaches and every single one of them aims to provide the best understanding and interpretation of human behaviour and internal thinking processes for the purpose of betterment and understanding, progress and improvement in the world, however not all schools of psychology agree with each other this is why there are different psychologies to explain and describe different processes and behaviours such as humanistic, behavioural, existential and so on. Neither is wrong but just has different ways of looking at the same thing. At the end of the day all psychology worldwide is theoretical, theory based on information available at the time of the analysis or interpretations of information.
