Course Description

Introduction to Creative Writing!

In exploring what defines the art and craft of creative writing, we can hone the approaches many writers use to varying degrees.

To achieve a practical understanding means more than learning from how-to books. Techniques and insight lift us as we gain fresh perspectives of other writers’ work.

In essence, we need to read a necessary corpus of readings but must go further, developing the habit of reading critically as a writer.

Creative writing is not about building a portfolio to get published. Of all workshop classes, it is in the creative writing workshops that students have come to expect very much.

Defined by a degree programme, this implies problem travails including the evaluation of students’ written work with comments – kindly, helpfully, insightful – of other class members and their tutor are to be welcomed.

In the intent of creative writing, the aim must be to invent, from the materials available to and considered by the imagination, characters, plots, conflicts, and settings appropriate to the story, novel, or play being tackled, and to develop a sound textured and worked to by a number of expressive details that seemed inevitably to belong there as much as if they had been found collected on a beach, driven by a storyteller, playwright, poet, or philosopher with a rich voice.

Creative writing is an integral part of many course programs, and writing is an increasingly important element in testing, selection, promotion, and evaluation. However, research in this field, although plentiful, has not joined in significant degree in the process of creative writing itself.

We know little of the creative process in individuals and know little of the craft or what we teach. Because creative writing is now an important part of our academic programs and our culture generally, and because we know that some are better at it than others, does creative writing instruction temper, differentiate talent into a skill?

This course is open to anyone to enrol with or without any previous knowledge, qualifications or training in creative writing. Anyone is welcome to book onto this course.
