School psychology dates back as far as the 19th and early 20th century. School psychology is an area which is entwined with clinical and functional or contemporary psychology.
School psychology was originally developed from functional psychology as a result of school psychologists with interests in exploring the behaviours of children and their dysfunction, attitudes with their peers and their school life, the problems they have with teachers and their authority and most importantly psychologists wanted to know more about children’s learning processes and personal self development including why some students will easily absorb educational material better than others who often fall out of the system and struggle to make their grades.
School psychologists were trying to understand the causes and the reasons behind some child behaviours and the destructive effect this was having on learning and development along with the knock-on effects it was having on other students.
Additionally, school psychology is one of the earliest examples of actual clinical psychology which begun around 1880.
There were psychologists at that time who approached the different ways on how to improve the betterment of the school children to help them gain the most out of their learning with the least disruption to both themselves and their peers.
School psychologists are mainly interested in the concerns of daily classroom learning and early childhood behavioural problems which directly reflects mental health issues which appears to be directly linked with out-of-school life, in particular the home and family life, past upbringing or negative influences from parents. Why does this affect educational learning and development and why are so many children so defiant against authority and learning when it is in their greatest interest and personal self development or betterment. These are some of the questions school psychologist wanted answering.
Even today these are some of the problems that exist in school daily lessons.
With this early knowledge, School psychologists are now better armed to positively assist and enhance children’s personal enrichment of schooling and educational development along with personal needs by aiming to reduce the negativity and influences that surrounds them including identifying and recognising various risks which can include internal school bullying, peer pressure and out-of-school home life problems or abuse that may be affecting the child.
