Course Description

What is bipolar disorder?

Introduction

The definition of bipolar disorder is having or relating to two opposite poles of extremities.

Bipolar disorder was previously known as manic depression which is a disorder of the mood and is characterised by a swing in the sufferer’s mood or state of mind from the very high to the very low or in other words a state of euphoria, euphoric down to the depressed, depressive.

In the high state which is also known as hypomania the sufferer will behave in a way which demonstrates a high level of energy. Speech and thought are generally excessive or faster than normal and topics of conversation will speed up and speech content may leap suddenly from one place to the next leaving the conversation hard to follow or engage in.

There is also a general view or belief often called delusion about one’s ability and power with a loss of self-awareness on how one is being seen or sounds in the judgement and eyes of others due to be high or grandiose thoughts and ideas that are being demonstrated.

In the lower or depressed, depressive state the sufferer can feel helpless, worthless, exhausted, highly self-critical, considerably self doubtful and have difficulty in focusing or committing to any task due to a sense of distraction from intrusive thoughts and feelings.

People in the lower state find it difficult to interact with others socially and may become isolated or solitary and have suicidal thoughts on ending it all.

Bipolar disorder is commonly experienced by about 10 to 20 people in every thousand of the UK population.
