What we call Cymatics is the evolution of this ancient knowledge of the power of sound. The experimentation and study of this powerful force is revealing great potential in all fields of our contemporary life, from technology to medicine and sociology to spirituality. The shapes are visible windows to the harmonic patterns of oscillations within states of being.

Origins

The article is an exploration of the science and art of Cymatics - the study of visible sound and vibration, and it is simultaneously a reflection on the ways in which sound manifestations can enrich the aesthetics of contemporary media arts. It is focused primarily on the relationship between cymatic phenomena and the sound of resonant systems of definite form and construction.

This article examines the ways in which the exploration and visualization of pure sound and sonic qualities through vibrating compounds can offer us a more profound understanding and engagement with the complex and confusing world of “contemporary sonic art” and its specific aesthetics.

From the general public to high art, Cymatics visual representations are deeply rooted in our minds and hearts, not only in the field of sensory experience but also as an animated metaphor that accompanies the act of listening.

The relevant fields of science that contributed towards a better understanding of the scientific and artistic research on sound visualization through the use of images produced by the interaction of sound waves with materials in a constrained vibrational mode are explored.

The paper opens with an introduction to the main concepts of the field of Cymatics and goes on to explore the contributions made by scientists and inventors who studied the physical and visual manifestations of sound.

By defining the main theoretical and methodological frameworks adopted in order to visualize sound, the essay retraces the different visual systems proposed and developed by men of science, focusing primarily on the observable sound-generated visual phenomena.

In the last section, the main trends related to the use and artistic exploration of sound phenomena, defined as a "manifestation of the sonic," are examined. In this context, the themes of synesthetic relationships and the architecture of sound are tackled. The conclusion describes the main aspects of the "cymatic experience" through concrete examples.

Concepts and Principles

What does cymatics have in common with the works of artists like Brancusi, Van Gogh, and Jackson Pollock, and why might such consideration be of interest to the school science class? On the surface, not much. However, historians of science and education are turning their attention to areas where art, design, and science intersect.

As humans have always endeavoured to understand and come in touch with nature’s hidden forces, the drawing, interpreting, and modelling of the forces silhouetting such interest are best illustrated when looked into the collaborative efforts of artists and scientists.

And why not use materials from the fields of cymatics and bioacoustics to support cross-disciplinary activities in the school or science center setting? Such bridges are rarely covered in formal education.

Resonance principles related to the way internal structures within objects are shaped, the way these structures absorb or transfer energy during interactions with acoustic waves, and the way resonant interaction affects the propagation and timbre of sound are often so esoteric and mathematically and conceptually difficult that the normal school class would normally shy away from such studies.

However, harmonic paradigm studies—that is, controlled tuning of the volume of an enclosed space—could be made quite simple, light, fun to perform, and of key interest during laboratory studies and science projects. Such experiments could indeed enlighten the path to more complicated musical and physical resonance studies done during the upper teenage years and at the university level.
