Course Description

Understanding the Dangers of Sepsis!

If one has a higher risk of sepsis such as through an infection or medical condition, there may be sickness in the body with no cause found.

Symptoms such as confusion or sleepiness, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, and unexplained muscle pain and fatigue may call for a check on sepsis.

Sepsis must be treated immediately with the use of antibiotics and intravenous fluids. Other medications are also used as needed. A source of infection should also be determined and treated. Other treatment may consist of draining an abscess or infected fluid.

Common signs and symptoms include fever, increased heart rate, increased breathing rate, and confusion.

There may be severe symptoms such as shortness of breath and low blood pressure. Sepsis may be more likely in those with weakened immune systems. There are simple steps that aid in prevention and it must be treated quickly in those who have it. Frequently the initial infection is in the lung, urinary tract, or in the abdominal area.

Sepsis is a complex syndrome that results when the body’s response to an invasive infection injures its own tissues and organs.
It is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Severe sepsis is defined when an infectious process leads to any number of acute organ dysfunctions.

The transition from sepsis to severe sepsis is abrupt. Shock occurs when there is a hypoperfusion state or hypotension that is defined by an abnormality in one’s systolic blood pressure or one’s lactate level.

Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is when a fragile balance tips precipitously and immediate intervention is necessary. With the increasing numbers of elderly and immunocompromised among us, we are likely to see these dangerous syndromes more frequently in our patient care settings. It is important to understand the implications to avoid the degree of patient morbidity and mortality which will likely ensue without early intervention.

Sepsis develops when the body mounts an overwhelming inflammatory response to an infection. Incidence is increasing in the United States and around the world at an alarming rate. It is the most expensive condition to treat in United States hospitals and is the leading cause of death in the world.

There is increasing interest in and emphasis on early diagnosis and treatment of this disease process, as the timing of antibiotic therapy and supportive care is crucial. Nurses are the ones who spend the most amount of time with the patients and are the most likely to be among the first health care team members to recognize early signs. It is crucial that they be well informed on this topic in order to promote optimal patient outcomes.

Nurses have been shown to play an influential role in the early recognition of sepsis and the implementation of early management strategies.
