Course Description

Oncology Counselling Diploma Course

The definition of oncology is the study and treatment of tumors. Oncology is a specific field of specialist medicine that is dedicated to the study and advancement of cancerous tumors.

  • Clinical oncology consists of three main disciplines which include:
  • Surgical Oncology which incorporates staging, biopsy and the surgical resection of tumors.
  • Medical Oncology which is the specific treatment of cancer with the use of medicine and the inclusion of chemotherapy treatments.
  • Radiation Oncology is the treatment of cancer using therapeutic radiation.

A physician who works in this area of oncology is commonly known as an oncologist or specialist in oncology.

The main goal of oncology is to seek out and eliminate or remove the tumour with the use of surgery, radiotherapy and includes drugs/pharmaceutical medicine, chemotherapy and radiology or tumour therapy.

Treatment and diagnosis

Treatment and diagnosis often starts with an investigation leading to a final diagnosis which is often carried out through biopsy, x-rays, endoscopic exploration, CT scanning, MRI scanning, ultrasound, PET scanning, nuclear medicine, blood tests, tumor markers and all the various radiological approaches available.

After Diagnosis

After the diagnosis is established with the patient, stages of the disease must be carefully and sympathetically discussed with to establish the best course of action in dealing with the tumor and what type of treatment and intervention would be required depending on the stage in development of the tumor.

Cancer is rife and one of the biggest killers in the Western world.

For a patient to discover that they have early or an advanced stage developed tumor is horrific. Most patients will immediately enter into emotional and psychological, changing states which not only affects their whole life but can have a terrific knock-on effect throughout the family and loved ones.

To find out that the patient has an advanced form of tumor or cancer and that in some cases treatment may help but it is highly likely that they are about to die and maybe given a period in which to prepare for their death.

This is totally life changing to say the least and due to the reactions within the mind, many people do need help in coming to terms with and dealing with all the emotions and feelings that will surface after discovering that one has an inoperable tumor or they may have a 50-50 chance of surviving treatments.

This course introduces the beginner to the subject of oncology and oncology counselling in an easy to understand and stimulating learning approach.

This course is open to anyone with an interest in oncology and is ideally suited to physicians and therapists with an interest in learning more about oncology.

This course explores what it is like to discover you or a patient has cancer which is either treatable or untreatable.

Provides an in-depth study on the subject of oncology and counselling and allows the two subjects to blend together to work with people who need both empathetic and sympathetic understanding to what they are going through..

Most patients need interpretation and understanding as to how and why they are feeling and thinking the way they are and to find ways through head material such as the fears and emotions which are uppermost in the patient’s mind.

Most patients of cancer want to feel better in themselves and confront and deal with the coming weeks and months and how best to do that without the turmoil and conflicts that most will go through.

This course provides an accessible easy to dip into overview on the scientific foundation of cancer and tumor medicine covering all the common cancers including various approaches investigation, management and treatment routes.
