Course Description

What is multicultural counselling?
Introduction.

The meaning of multiculturalism encapsulates a broad range of differences, ethnic and social variations such as social class, age, gender, ability/disability, religion/belief systems, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

Multicultural counselling includes ethnographic variables such as language, nationality, religion and ethnicity, gender, age, demographics, social rank and status, educational background, class and social standards, work employment, unemployment, financial advantage or disadvantage.

Multiculturalism and counselling places emphasis on the way we are similar and different from each other both at the same time and confronts ideas and arguments from those who presume either the similarities and differences matter or don’t matter including acceptance or rejection of stereotypes.

Multicultural counselling provides various helping methods within a cultural context and begins with creating a heightened awareness on the differences or similarities between clients, family and cultural beliefs and the way the client views society and the state they live in.

This course provides a therapy which takes into account the many ethnic and racial diversities of the person seeking counselling.

Multicultural counselling respectfully and sensitively engages in empathy, understanding and consideration for the clients or family cultural belief and explores the effects that can have on counselling sessions.

This course is open to anyone to enrol with or without any background training but is ideally suited to qualified psychotherapists and counsellors working with a mixture of clients from differing backgrounds with specific emphasis on a sharp understanding of each cultural, ethnic and racial difference.

Covering stereotypes, immigration, alienation, racism, hate, double identity and race.

This course is ideal as a dip in reference for any student studying on any counselling course that needs you to look at multiculturalism as part of the study modules.

Suitable for all therapists including social workers and support workers working within a multicultural setting.

Upon completion of this course the student will have gained considerable understanding, awareness and most importantly sensitivity to the different client’s cultural and racial background in which counselling and support is required.
