Course Description
Meteorology is an active science that seeks to understand and predict weather phenomena through observation, theory, and modeling.
Its problems are difficult due to the complexity of the Earth’s atmosphere. This atmosphere has an upper boundary at approximately 300 miles above the Earth’s surface, and the variations of temperature, humidity, and pressure that affect the weather occur at its lowest 10 miles.
With the advent of aircraft and spacecraft, the atmosphere must also be considered as a medium for vehicular travel and must be studied to protect people, animals, and structural integrity.
Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and its phenomena, specifically the weather. In the broadest sense, meteorology is the study of Earth’s atmosphere and the weather patterns, systems, and events that occur within it.
Meteorology studies short-term weather, seasonal weather, atmospheric chemistry, environmental influences on the atmosphere, air pollution, wind transportation, and land use planning.
The dissemination of meteorological information through rapid communications is vital to helping prevent the loss of life and property due to severe weather phenomena. As our population grows and urbanizes, the potential for damage created by widespread thunderstorm winds, tornadoes, dense fog, freezing rain, snow, hurricanes, and tropical storms increases dramatically.
The Greek root of the word meteorology refers to the study of events or changeable matters that are happening in the region of the atmosphere or space that we live in.
Meteorology studies these events and phenomena that exist in the atmosphere. All components of the atmosphere, including temperature, pressure, wind, rainfall, snow, fog, and others, are the spokes of our subject. The main and general characteristic of the atmosphere is that its components are inclined to influence the human world and its properties and qualities.
Some of these events and phenomena occur over a period, while others occur over short intervals of time. Our age is the space age, and it is well known that the solution to many of the problems that we are facing on Earth is related to our surrounding space. Consequently, we try to study everything that occurs in our surrounding air components, especially the complex processes that are still behind the sphere curtain and lead to various incredible meteorological events from clear weather to storms.
This course is open to anyone with an interest in Meteorology and that includes beginners and professionals in related fields.
