Course Description

What is body psychotherapy?

Introduction. Body psychotherapy also known as body oriented psychotherapy is a school or offshoot of psychotherapy that applies the fundamental basics of somatic psychology.

This was originally created in the works of Sigmund Freud, Pierre Janet and Wilhelm Reich who developed the therapy which was originally known as vegetotherapy reaching as far back as the 1920s.

Wilhelm Reich and former student and then colleague of Sigmund Freud explored and extended psychoanalysis by observing how the repression of emotion and feelings related to the inhibition of the human body.

Wilhelm Reich created a concept called armour of character or better-known as ‘character armour’ which describes how people create body postures which are fixed and rigid in relation to patterns towards self protection of internal and external emotional pain.

Wilhelm Reich suggested physical and mental, also known has psychosomatic and psychological reactions and symptoms need to be addressed in the context of these unconscious patterns.

He observed these patterns spread through the entire body and mind reaching every microscopic biological mechanism within our system including our metabolism, our breathing and nervous system.

Body psychotherapy is a therapy that heightens awareness which can open up a vast neglected world of internal information for both the therapist and the client whilst working together.

By getting in touch with body awareness we get in touch with powerful repressed feelings and conflicts within the unconscious which have been buried over our lifetime to be re-introduced back into the cycle of feeling and thought to become more accepted or released thus reducing the symptoms.
