Introduction!
Active listening is an essential interpersonal process. It enhances the effective passage of information among individuals. In active listening, the listener pays close attention, responds with interest, and understands and acknowledges.
The listener ignores any stimuli that may result in distortion or misinterpretation during the information passage from the speaker.
Empathy
Whenever anyone experiences empathy from another individual, they will tend to feel valued, acknowledged, and understood, as negative criticism and assessment of their thoughts or life are never part of real empathy.
Empathy is important in the development and maintenance of healthy social relationships. The various ways of listening we use at any given time reflect our objectives. Accordingly, parents and teachers are expected to demonstrate responsiveness to these emotions and thoughts. However, we hear different things in different ways, and our responses differ depending on the objectives and dimensions of those ways.
Differences between Active Listening and Empathy
Active listening is a manner of responding to someone with a continuous responsibility that helps the speaker experience a sense of being truly recognized and understood. This type of listening includes (1) reflective response, (2) guiding the speaker’s exploration in various approaches, (3) questioning the speaker to help in understanding and acknowledgment, (4) directing the speaker for valuable observations, and (5) concentrating on the speaker’s feelings.
Empathy, on the other hand, refers to the ability to comprehend and subscribe to another person’s understanding. This completely develops from within and is not an ability you read in a book or imitate to get the expected response.
Listening to people well is a very notable skill you can develop. How well you listen has a major impact on the effectiveness of your communication, the quality and stability of your relationship, and your life as a whole. Listening skills are vital for our daily lives, allowing us to learn and understand the many ways people live and love.
Active listening is a key to building trust in any situation, and in romantic relationships in particular. It is a neglected skill, even though listening is essential to strong, healthy relationships between you and your partner. Improving your active listening ability helps you communicate with your partner better through all the stages of your relationship because it helps build a safe, supportive environment, allowing your partner to share and communicate their true feelings.
You create a safe atmosphere that helps your partner feel comfortable being open, honest, and vulnerable. When your partner feels valued, it can reveal small requests and needs that, when fulfilled, can greatly enhance the relationship. You can transform the way you communicate with your partner by changing your focus from wanting to speak to a point where you can’t wait to hear what your partner wants to communicate.
