This course provides insights into modern slavery.

Modern slavery is the act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harbouring or receiving a person for the purpose of exploitation.

Modern slavery takes many forms, and is known by many names, including: human trafficking, forced labour, bonded labour, debt bondage, domestic servitude, forced labour, child labour, forced child labour, serfdom, and others.

Slavery, forced labour, human trafficking, in particular for exploitation purposes, are all acts that violate fundamental human rights.

These human rights abuses defy the legal norms of various countries, demanding responses from the international community for an effective fight against them.

The approval of laws that criminalize, prevent, and repress the acts of modern slavery and related forms of exploitation is part of the international community’s commitment to abolishing the practice, affirming the importance of legal rigor in these matters. In different countries, controversies arise with respect to the use of terms in regulations, as well as to the scope of the corresponding crimes and the proposed penalties.

There are discrepancies as to the classification of certain acts, which may hinder their recognition, as well as difficulties in the analysis and effective activation of various proposals arising from the issue.

The inter and multidisciplinary character needs attention from the proposers and intensifies the political and ideological disputes surrounding the topic.
