Course Description

What is School Counselling?

Introduction.

One of the most prominent areas of concern within the minds of many schoolchildren throughout teenage schooling has got to be centred on peer pressure and acceptance.

Of course there are other areas of concern such as making the grade and doing well however generally speaking for the majority of schoolchildren one of the greatest concerns is the pressure to meet peer demand or expectation regarding fitting in, being excepted within the group, social acceptance, being part of the tribe, being popular, being liked, avoiding rejection, isolation and abandonment, having the right clothes, the right body image, height, body size, tattoos and piercings, the right smart phone etc.

This list goes on and it is at the top of most teenagers’ hearts, in other words – fears and insecurities.

In the eyes of adults some of these things are wishy-washy hindrances to progress in education, however we are not talking about the mindset of an adult, we are talking about the mindset of a teenager who is someone who has just left childhood and is between that childhood and adulthood place with lots of screaming hormones such as oestrogen and testosterone and other chemicals floating around along with emotions in a contradictory and imbalanced way therefore any irregularity in social or group interaction amongst peers can lead to depression and in worst-case scenarios suicide especially if this the result of ridicule, embarrassment and shame or bullying which includes intimidation, name calling, mocking and actual physical manhandling or assault.

Any of these things can absolutely destroy the mind of a teenager and any repetition or prolonged exposure to any of these issues can result in psychological damage and the development of long term or permanent fears, phobias and aversions resulting in further mental and psychological turmoil.

One tiny little seed can turn into an oak tree of problems.

Any of these things can contribute to the development of psychological and emotional problems in later life such as social difficulties and fears which hinder people in relationships and employment and so on.

A wise and gentle counsellor will know this. This is why school counsellors are essential. Schools should have a counsellor in every school and college throughout the world let alone the UK because it is these things world over that leads to greater problems in later life.

Additionally, any irregularity in progress and development in these specific types of areas as outlined above will develop into long term problems without a shadow of a doubt.

Any school child or teenager experiencing any of the above would really benefit from having someone to talk to, to help them iron out the way they are feeling and thinking so that things can be put into perspective and neutralised before they get out of hand.

School counsellors can assist in making small changes in the way the student is thinking. A session in confidence with a school counsellor can alter the path that school child may be heading down and most parents who have lost a child to suicide or imprisonment because of the actions or behaviours of their peers will tell you that if only they had spoken out in the early days things could have been avoided.

Even educational progress and development can be affected or hindered simply due to any of the above issues which we’ve all experienced to one extent or another.

Counselling in schools or school-based counselling is one of the most effective forms of psychological intervention or therapy for teenagers within the UK and hundreds of thousands of sessions are being booked in per year. Supporting therapy or counselling from a wise gentle counsellor is absolutely paramount for the growth and development of any youngster. Why? Because most teenagers will go to the ends of the earth to hide the way they are feeling. To reveal how they are feeling or to reveal any of the above will indicate that they are weak, needy and dependent which may result in ridicule and laughter.

School counsellors are also beneficial to many teachers and tutors under stress and pressure especially when working with unruly children and argumentative or aggressive parents.

Most students or pupils that seek out counselling are usually between the ages of 12 to 15-year-olds and 75% are white females with males making up the rest.

School counselling therapy will put things into perspective and can be just enough to change the course of events, just enough to alter that child from heading to depression, anxiety or isolation and loneliness.

School counselling can help students on the right career path and direct them to their educational goals by helping them to remove negative obstacles.

Any form of school counselling will improve the mental health and well-being of most students who have sought out some counselling sessions.

School counsellors can help a child who is feeling sick with anxiety over having to confront the school bullies or those who are having difficulties with tackling certain subjects such as maths.

Things which most people might dismiss as being silly and petty such as the cat died and the child needs to talk about their feelings because they can’t concentrate on school work or mum and dad are arguing all the time or have just divorced.

Or the child may be worried that they might be harmed by an alcoholic parent or worse! Children need to talk and the more counsellors there are within schools the more comfortable and familiar student will feel they can consult in confidence with a counsellor without being judged for being weak and incapable of sorting out your own thoughts and feelings.

School counsellors help children cope and this course will help you to learn about school counselling. This course is open to anyone working in and around the lives of children.
