Course Description

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Diploma Course

What is post traumatic stress disorder – PTSD?

The official and general description of PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can develop following the experiences of real life-threatening events which can be a war zone, military fighting or combat scenario, anything that can occur within natural disaster scenarios, serious accidents or road traffic collisions, terrorist incidents and physical assaults, attacks of any kind.

Open College UK Ltd specifically describes post-traumatic stress disorder – PTSD as follows:

PTSD is a label and description or name given to suffers who experience a mixture of troublesome, negative feelings and emotions all taking place at the same time that come and go, on and off throughout the day, rising and falling in frequency, appearance and severity, swinging from mild, strong to severe and chronic.

In a nutshell, most sufferers of PTSD experience a mixture of symptoms mainly anxiety, fear, apprehension, anticipation, anxiousness, high vigilance up to super vigilance, paranoia, distrust and excessive suspicion of threats of ANY kind, may that be physical and emotional or psychological from ANY situation or from people around them.

This can include seeing, sensing, imagining, feeling any of the above in any normal situation where other people don’t or aren’t experiencing at that same time.

Every human being on the planet has the potential to suffer and experience post-traumatic stress disorder and no one person is immune to it, given the fertile ground for circumstances or scenarios that could arise for people to unfortunately find themselves in.

We are all capable of dealing with traumatic and troublesome events but the unconscious mind creates the symptoms LATER ON and later on can be months or years later but not at the time when the events happen, whatever them events may have been.

Our natural evolutionary fight or flight process or reflex actions has been activated and although falsely and incorrectly firing off, it is trying to protect us from real or imagined harm or perceived threats to the self.

These incorrect reactions happen on and off throughout the sufferer’s day in normal safe environments and various self defence mechanisms are active and on high alert. The whole alert process is often a mixed up mess of unconscious activity taking place intruding into the suffers awareness and thoughts.

Many sufferers will end up on pharmaceutical products and medication to quieten down the mental activity and calm the mind but unfortunately the symptoms return once the medication wears of and often far worse.

The medication for many sufferers makes things worse in the long run and psychological intervention therapy is also often required.

The unconscious mind produces symptoms and it doesn’t know the difference between real or imagined scenarios – it just reacts. (Please see ‘articles’ section to understand more about the unconscious minds self defence mechanisms and incorrect reactions).

Many sufferers of PTSD often feel scared or frightened with mixed feelings just trickling along in the background under the surface on and off throughout the day and just this alone can create chaos in the awareness and well-being of the sufferer.

The body and mind is reacting as though the sufferer was and is in a minefield or a war zone with real life events taking place when they are not. Irrespective of how you view it, the person experiencing the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder is actually standing in a threatening and potentially dangerous place even though there may be sitting comfortably in front of their safe fireplace in their home with loved ones around them.

The symptoms/the unconscious mind cannot tell the difference once they’re activated.

Additionally, along with the outlined experiences of the above symptoms, which can play havoc on thought processes and everyday functions such as work, family and relationships, the reliving of events or the re-experiencing of symptoms and past scenarios is huge.

The avoidance of ALL situations is common along with meeting new people, communities, social situations, gatherings and ANY other experiences that could react, re-enact or evoke memories and feelings often called flashbacks is high.

Out of nowhere reactions appear, such as triggers and intrusive fears, feelings or thoughts which can result in the repetitive recalling of the events and circumstances, over and over and over again.

Other deeper feelings and experiences can also surface from person-to-person such a shame, guilt, rage, violence and these can lead to other problems such as severe anxiety, OCD, depression and suicide in worst-case scenarios along with prison or drug and alcohol addictions due to self medicating and escapism needs.

Other sufferers may lose all interest in everyday activities and isolate themselves and feel detached and unable to socialise.

The list is endless and each individual sufferer will experience many of the above board descriptions along with their own unique list of experiences, feelings and emotions or unique combinations of them. Every sufferer will have their own unique blend or combination of experiences which all centers on the mental and physical awareness, specifically around the outside ‘self awareness’.
