Course Description

What is the definition of psychotherapy?

Both of the titles psychotherapy and counselling are words to describe the most common form of talking therapies. Psychotherapy is the treatment of emotional, psychological, and mental disorders through verbal communication as opposed to medicine, pharmaceutical products/drugs or by any other medical intervention.

Duration of treatment.

Psychotherapy is a treatment delivered over a period of time through consultations usually lasting up to one hour. These sessions of psychotherapy can be on a one-to-one basis between client and psychotherapist, over the telephone and e-mail or video link such as Skype which are now becoming very common with the growth of the Internet.

Psychotherapy treatments are also available for couples, relationships or families and groups. The kinds of people that visit for treatment are very broad and come from all walks of life. Psychotherapy is available to everyone in need without discrimination. The duration of treatment can be very short, medium or long term or even lifelong in some cases and is designed to help the client make changes within themselves to improve, change, alter their feelings and thought patterns to improve and enhance their sense of well-being.

Why do people have psychotherapy?

People often visit psychotherapists for treatment because they are in some form of difficulty and their first consultation is usually the culmination of many years of trying to battle and tolerate conflicts and situations within that person or their life.

A first consultation is often at the end of a personal battle, conflict or tether where people have reached the point where they can no longer cope with feelings, thoughts, negative emotions and conflicts within themselves without some guidance or professional help.

Most people who arrive at psychotherapy are unsure of what will take place but they are certain that they have already decided they do need someone to intervene and help them better manage their internal thoughts and feelings.

Most people who attend psychotherapy are experiencing turmoil, conflicts, distress and troubling emotions and require someone to help them unravel, interpret and help put into perspective what they feel and think, in other words to ask a therapist what can be done about certain situations and experiences that they are in difficulty with.

These could very intrusive and unwanted feelings and thoughts such as fears and anxieties or depression and loneliness. Talking to a psychotherapist in some way makes it non personal because there is a level of anonymity and detachment involved, as opposed to sharing their personal experiences with family members or loved ones which can be perceived as awkward, shameful and embarrassing for some.

There are also people who just simply need to talk and only talk to just iron out a few things to find balance and happiness again.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is assured 100% within the psychotherapeutic relationship and this is part of the trust bond between client and therapist. Data protection applies at all times however only in some cases were harm to oneself which could result in serious injury or death and also to others would be the only reason confidentiality would be breached in the interests of that client along with other vulnerable people who might be at risk including minors.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is simply working through problems to resolve issues, ease pressure to produce more positive and productive lives for the client.

Psychotherapists will help you to interpret and reorganise thoughts and feelings using various different approaches and these can include such practices as CBT otherwise known as cognitive behavioural therapy or by one of the many other forms of talking-based therapies that are available which may include the use of certain techniques like NLP approaches.

After a certain amount of sessions a client will have gained a better understanding of their own internal conflicts, emotions and feelings and have acquired new skills in order to better deal with unwanted feelings and thoughts.

Psychotherapy looks at the internal ways of thought and how you interpret and deal with experiences and what you bring into those experiences by way of your beliefs and habits.

Psychotherapy is ideal for dealing with anxiousness, feelings of depression or anger and feelings of low self-worth, even jealousy and suspicion, feeling unwanted after a divorce or grieving over the loss of a loved one due to bereavement.
