Course Description

Mindfulness and Schema Therapy Course

What is schema therapy and mindfulness?

Schema therapy is a form of psychotherapy originally developed by Dr. Jeffrey Young to specifically deal with severe and chronic depression and other various personality disorders.

Combined within schema therapy are parts from other therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy, gestalt therapy and object relations, all combined in one systematic therapeutic treatment approach.

Mindfulness has been combined with schema therapy involving daily mental meditations for those who wish to add a spiritual element to their lives.

Mindfulness and schema therapy combined offer a unique integration of the most effective and popular treatments in the world of psychology to date.

This course offers a variety of techniques and approaches leading to an easy application of this therapy for a variety of personality disorders.

This course demonstrates various effective treatments for borderline personality disorder and other associated problems with the use of schema mindfulness therapy.

This course will provide students with a guide to understanding how mindfulness can be better used to understand various schema triggered responses and how to change the negative responses to more positive ones thereby altering reactions to certain situations.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a mental state of heightened and active attention on the present – in the here and now.

Being mindful, means you are externally and internally observing the thoughts and feelings you’re experiencing without making any direct critical or negative judgements on them and naturally allowing them to rise, appear and then fall away. Which they will if you know how to let them!

Living in the here and now and being aware of the rise and fall of thoughts, coming and going of thoughts and feelings without being swept away by them. This is mindfulness.

Developing mindfulness gives you control back over the intrusive and appearing thoughts and feelings that have previously affected you. By developing mindfulness you are able to identify, reduce negative and/or unpleasant feelings and thoughts allowing you a better possibility of changing them as opposed to being swept away by them.

By recognising the thoughts and feelings for what they are, you’re now entering into a state of allowing them to just be and then disperse and disappear, thereby giving you control over them.

By keeping your mind in the here and now stops you wandering off with the thoughts that can hurt you such as pain and fear.

By developing this mindfulness you are able to hold your own in the here and now instead of travelling off with the thoughts that had appeared. Once you grasp this you will realise how simple it is.

Obviously, you can’t remain in a mindful state at all times but you can several times a day on and off and with daily practice you will develop the ability to control your mind.

On a deeper level, the present moment is something that can’t be truly grasped because the moment you do, it has passed by and has been replaced by a new moment and so on.
