Course Description

Female Genital Mutilation Counselling Course

What is FGM?

Other names for FGM are female circumcision which is a procedure that deliberately and intentionally mutilates or cuts the female genital area in one of three ways.

  1. Clitoridectomy which is the removal of part or all of the clitoris.
  2. Excision which is the removal of part or all of the clitoris and the inner labia which is the skin around the vagina.
  3. Infibulation which is the narrowing or reduction of the vagina opening by the creation of a seal by cutting and repositioning the labia skin.

Additionally other procedures involve cutting, piercing, pricking, burning and scraping the area.

The process is to cause injury and alteration to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons and the practice is outlawed and the illegal in the United Kingdom but occurs in private.

It is estimated that over 140,000 women in the United Kingdom have experienced this practice of FGM mutilation and the true figure is maybe much higher due to the hidden and unreported nature of the practice.

Often young girls are taken to other countries of origin during holiday times which allows time for the wounds to heal before their return.

It’s also been suggested that the practice takes place in UK behind closed doors and again the true extent is unknown.

The cutting procedure is often carried out by females with no medical background training, anaesthetics or antiseptic treatments with poor hygiene and can involve scalpels, scissors and razorblades with the girls often forcibly and physically restrained to allow the cutting to take place.

There are no health benefits to FGM which can cause psychological and emotional harm later in life as the practice is often carried out on young girls between infancy up to 15 years of age.

There is a very long list of short and long term consequences both physically, psychologically, emotionally and mentally.

It has been reported that psychological damage can affect a person who has experienced FGM for the rest of their lives and case studies have shown that women often feel betrayed by their parents who considered it an unnecessary and a traumatic experience leading to anger and hate.

FGM is often frowned upon with horror in the West but considered acceptable and normal in other countries.

FGM is carried out specifically for religious, cultural and social reasons within their families and communities who consider it their private and cultural right.

This course is open to anyone wishing to learn more about counselling for FGM and is ideally suited to therapists specifically counsellors or anyone in contact with sufferers of FGM.

Anyone is welcome to enrol onto this course including complete beginners or ‘anyone’ who needs to know more about FGM.

This course is two courses combined in ONE covering part A as outlined above on FGM and part B counselling.

The counselling part of this course pack is the actual counselling therapy course that can be viewed here.

Due to the controversial and sensitive nature of this subject this page has not gone into any greater detail than this.

This course provides a deep insight and overview on the whole area of female genital mutilation including the reasons and causes and how best to deal with sufferers who are most often experiencing psychological and emotional harm due to it.
