Course Description

Abnormal psychology is a specific field within psychology that examines the abnormality or irregularity of behavioural patterns including thought processes and emotion. Abnormal psychology explores abnormal behaviour within a clinical context. This type of irregular behaviour is often interpreted as not an actual mental disorder upon first glance.

Abnormal behaviour is anything we consider out of the ordinary or unusual as regards interacting with others, conducting oneself in public or in social settings especially when reacting to situations, circumstances and people in ways which are considered abnormal or irrational opposite to the way you would not behave or react.

Firstly, what is normal behaviour?

Is normal behaviour, that which we contrast abnormal behaviour with? To gauge and measure what is taking place!

Most behaviour which is considered average or normal in everyday life can easily be explored as having irregularity or abnormality within it, especially when you start scraping away at the surface of what is perceived as normal, you will find slight traces of abnormality or irregularity in most average peoples thought patterns, feelings and daily experiences within differing situations.

It could be argued that the definition of normal is the majority or average and that the definition of abnormality or abnormal behaviour is the minor or the lesser, simply because negative or abnormal behaviour is often counterproductive to our progress and advancement in life, social situations, personal development and even evolution as a whole. Even being labelled or judged as having abnormal behaviour is considered akin to some sort of mental health issue, neurosis or irrationality.

Abnormal behaviour is not the common but it is a demonstration of irregular thought patterns, feelings and emotions which are being expressed on the surface the same way as normal psychology as far as the unconscious mind is concerned anyway.

The unconscious mind doesn’t interpret it the way the conscious mind does. The unconscious mind just produces the reactions that lead us to feel the way we do. The unconscious mind cannot analyse, it just produces reactions or symptoms through association of stored up data and misinterpretation or crossed wires.

Abnormal behaviour is many-fold including maladaptiveness in a person, experiencing personal and internal psychological distress and behaviour which leads to the causing of personal and psychological distress in others, antisocial or deviant behaviour and at times outrageous or bizarre behaviour.

These types of behaviour are often called different, irrational, bizarre, embarrassing or shameful, selfish and dangerous or self-inflicted.

Often these labels or descriptions which are given to those who have expressed abnormal behaviour are usually the result of ignorance or lack of understanding as to why a person is behaving that way and sometimes it is not always possible to know why a person is behaving a specific way as it makes no sense to us.

A large proportion of abnormal psychology or behaviour within everyday society is the result of alcohol, drug addiction and mental health issues.

Literally every single human being throughout the world has at some time in their life experienced and outwardly displayed a certain degree of abnormal behaviour at some stage in their life.

For example most people would if they were honest admit that they have at some time experienced one or more incidents where they exploded into a rage and damaged some inanimate, breakable objects due to the peak of pressure or emotion that was expressed at the time.

Also most people have engaged in some sort of retribution or revenge against an employer who sacked them, a girlfriend or boyfriend who dumped you or even an enemy that slighted you.

Everybody has engaged in abnormal behaviour to some extent within their life therefore we condemn ourselves if we disrespectfully criticise and dismiss others abnormal behaviour without looking at our own past actions when we had our own irrational experiences or surges of emotion such as anger, hate, drunkenness or aggression.

The only difference is some people engage in abnormal or irregular behaviour for longer periods including symptoms and keep repeating the same patterns which lead into a vicious cycle of hospitalisation, police cells, prison, medication and alcoholism or drug addiction.

It is when a regular pattern of abnormal behaviour accompanied by symptoms occurs and it affects oneself and those around them to the point of legal intervention, help and or restraint. Abnormal disorders often comes under the category of anxiety disorders which include nervousness, hyper-vigilance and tension, anticipation and apprehension and all the behaviours that come off this.

General anxiety often called free-floating anxiety including extreme panic attacks and ongoing irrational or unexplained fears swinging between mild up to intense for what appears to be no reason or any actual real danger other than internally produced by the unconscious mind.

Inability to concentrate, argumentative, apprehension about something happening, anticipation over many things or worries and concerns about the future including ones own security and safety, physical problems, bodily disorders, sleep disorders, headaches, hyper-vigilance, nervous breakdowns and extreme moments of anxiety, phobias over situations or inanimate objects where there is no danger, extreme aversion or avoidance of social settings, OCD obsessions, reoccurring thoughts, repetitive patterns or rituals, minor or major depression, schizophrenia and psychosis to name just a few.
