Course Description

What is genetic counselling?
Introduction.

Genetic counselling is a counselling based service that provides advice, guidance and information about genetics and genetic inherited conditions.

Genetic conditions are often caused by mutations within genes and can be passed down through the generations.

This type of genetic counselling is often carried out specifically by NHS healthcare experts or BACP background trained counsellors with additional qualifications or a degree in the area of human genetics or they are a clinical geneticist specialising in counselling advice, guidance and techniques.

These healthcare professionals often work in a group with other professionals and provide counselling services and support to families involved in genetic irregularities, birth defects and inherited conditions.

A genetic counsellor will provide consultations usually as a result of a referral from your GP.

A genetic counsellor will advise on the risks to the client, family about the children of that family on genetic conditions and the risks of passing on disorders within the gene.

This course is open to anyone including the complete beginner. It is specifically targeted towards qualified healthcare professionals working in this field.
